At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him since they are skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. The apparent and clear truth that the Jesus of the gospels requests a kind of profound affection concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity something of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest of Us
