The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
